And a Happy New Year!

So New Year's in a few days, and a lot of people shoot off fireworks, which can make dog owners unhappy. My old dog used to hide under a bed because he was so scared of the noise!! Daisy(my dog) isn't really scared of them, but sometimes she barks. If your dog is a puppy, let him/her sit on your lap(preferably outside) and stroke him/her and talk to him/her softly, so that when he/she gets older, he/she will be less likely to be scared of fireworks or other really loud noises. You can try this with older dogs to; even if it doesn't teach them to be afraid of the noise, at least they will be comforted and might be quiet! =D Or you can play with them, teach them new tricks; anything that distracts them from being frightened. A really good idea(do this before New Years) is to go to your local pet store or butchers and buy some cow ankles or pig's ears(anything that it appropriate size for them, so they can't swallow it). Just try to stay away from rawhide; it isn'...

Puli

These are one of the coolest dogs, in my opinion. They have dread locks! They are born with a curly/wavy coat, and as it grows, it gets tangled and tirns in to dread locks. Pulis are small to medium sized dogs; they weigh from 30-35 lbs. Their dreaded coat varies from rusty black to black gray to white. They have a extremely high energy level. Pulis are expected to live approximately 14-16 yrs. Interestingly, they do not shed at all! They shed within their coat and they need professional gromming. If you have adopted one of these amazing creatures, you should ask your vet about HD, PRA, and vWd, (yes the v is not supposed to be capitalized). Also, cataracts are a good thing to check. Pulis need firm training and owners who enjoy working with dogs.  "Choosing a Dog for Dummies" by Chris Walkowicz

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas everybody!!! I love this time of the year; it's my favorite!!!! I love celebrating Christmas because everybody is so cheery and happy, and we get to celebrate Christ's coming to earth: The Real Reason for Christmas!!!!! It is the best gift we could ever get!!!! We(humans) rightfully deserve to die the most horrible death(hell, where we die forever, the worst place ever! It is painful and really just terrible. It truly does scare me to think of it). Christ Jesus came to save you!!!! He came into this terrible, sinful world from a perfect place(heaven) and was born of a virgin! In a tiny, smelly stable where he was placed in the horses and cows hay trough!!!! Then he lived a perfect life, facing all the temptations we face, and never ever messing up or doing wrong!!! And then he was blamed for your sin, was beaten, whipped, punched, spit on, and humiliated because of all the wrong things you have done. That I've done. That your neighbor has done!!! He was cru...

Burn Calories, and make the Dog Happy!

People are so obsessed with calories and cholesterol and whatever else adults worry about(health wise). But so many people are obese these days!!!!! It's sooo confusing!!!!! A good way to burn calories(and still have that chocolate cake in the fridge) is to start running or walking or jogging regularly. Even better, take your dog with you!! They will be happy, you'll be happy, and you'll both lose weight! If you are to busy to run or go to the gym, you can either rearrange your schedule, or, to lose weight, don't eat a lot of junk. Agreat way to do that is to cut out the sugar and carbs. If you want something unhealthy, just say no; studies say that a craving for food will go away in 20 minutes or less. But that's going to make you healthy, but not your dog, so there still is a problem. For your dog, cut down on snackies in between meals. Another thing you can try is swapping out 1/3 of your dog's food for canned pumpkin(do not get the canned pumkin pie stuff, ...

Thanksgiving: What are you Thankful for?

This Thanksgiving, I am really appreciating what I have! It helps a lot when you write down all the things you are thankful for. I am thankful for my family, my friends, my clean room, my toys, my clothes, my house, all of our cars, sports, God(and His love), and everything else!!!! Also think about what your pets are thankful for! A home, a bed, toys, their humans, etc, etc!

Brussels Griffon

So our friends got a new dog: it's a Brussels Griffon!!(his name is Buster)!!!!!! Those dogs are sooooo cute!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! His face is slightly puggish, and his beard and mustache. I mean, COME ON!!!!!!! Who wouldn't want to have a little bearded, pug-like creature running around your house!!! Anyway, Brussels are small dogs, probably about 8-13 lbs. But they are not fragile! They are very sturdy, but small children should not handle these dogs unsupervised, due to there small size. Their body is somewhat square, and they have(like I mentioned earlier) a very bushy, expressive face, almost human-like! Brussels Griffons are generally healthy, and can thrive in apartments, as long as they get daily walks/exercise. They can have smooth or rough coats, and come in 4 colors: red, belge(black and reddish brown), black, and black and tan. You should brush the smooth coats weekly, but rough coats should be professionally hand stripped. Also, start training this dog early! Overall, ...

Dog Show

Image
So there was a dog show at the Douglas County Fairgrounds, and I dragged my family there, as always. It was so cool to see all the different dog breeds!!!! The dogs were so poised and just, well, perfect! There was a boy, probably about 9 or 10, and he was showing a German Shepherd! I was so amazed at how much practice, time, and work he put into that dog! Most of the people were adults, all the way from 20 year olds, to like 1,000,000 year old people! A lot of them are stiff-necked, though! Especially the 40+ people! My dad is a photographer, and he was taking pictures of the dogs, and some of the owners are looking at us like their dogs are more human than we are! So, I like and don't like going to dog shows! Love the breeds, don't like most owners!

DoodleKakes!

So the other day my family and I had pancakes, and of course, Daisy Doodle(my dog) wanted some, too. So my dad whipped up some little pancakes for her. We call them DoodleKakes! Instructions for making a DoodleKake: You will need: one egg 1/2 cup of cornmeal spoon bowl griddle spatula Mix one egg and 1/2  cup of cornmeal in the bowl, and stir it with the spoon. Pour batter on to a hot griddle(you can put the griddle between 350 and 400 degrees). Cook for 1-2 minutes, or until edges are dull. Flip over with a spatula. Cook until done. Flip off of griddle onto a plate. They should be pretty hot, so let them cool down before giving them to your dog. A quicker way to cool them down is to put the m on an anti-griddle or in the freezer. I hope your dog enjoys these DoodleKakes!

Dog Breeds: Which One Is Right For You?

Image
There are SOOO many different dog breeds out there, and even more are being created!!! So, which dog breed fits your life style? First, you have to decide what size dog you want(remember, the bigger the dog is, the more food it's going to eat, the poop is bigger, etc.). If you live in an apartment, a smaller dog is probably a better choice than a Saint Bernard. Once you have decided on a size that is good for your family, then you should look at temperament, energy, trainability, and whatever else you have a concern for. There are a lot of "Dog Breed Selectors/Quiz". I have done just about every single one of them out there, and I would say my favorite is the Animal Planet "Dog Breed Selector". It asks good questions, and doesn't take very long to answer. Almost no dog is going to be a 100% perfect match. And make sure to check the "Runner Uppers", also. I just did this test again(I usually get different answers every time, unless you mark the sam...

Back to School

So, it's almost school time, and then the kids are gone for 6-7 hours, and the parents are at work for about the same time, maybe more. So what does Fido do all day? Is Fifi going to get lonely? What about Bella's separation anxiety? What if Stanley forgets to go outside to do his business? These are all common questions and worries all we pet parents have when its "Back to School" time. Some people say that your dog should only be left alone for 2 hours. But my dog, Daisy, can stay at the house by herself all day, if she had to! Of course, she must get bored napping on the couch, napping on my bed, and sunning herself outside. I mean, what else does she do?!?!?! She probably gets lonely too. But my mom works close to home, and my dad only works part time, so she gets some attention, at least.  But some in some families, parents work all the time, and/or can't come home to eat lunch, so Buddy is left home all all day, all alone! So some people turn to doggy day c...

Daisy: My Super Star!

Image
So the fair came to my town! My family doesn't ever go to the fair to ride on rides, or eat all that junk they sell, or get our fortunes told, or anything else like that. We go to see the 4-H bunnies and the dogs that jump in the pool to fetch a ball, and to go to the photo gallery. This was the first time I entered a photo in the fair, so I didn't think I would get a prize. But things turned out a little differently than I expected! My dad's a photographer, so he helped me get the lighting right and stuff like that. Guess what my subject was: Daisy!!(duh!)!!! So I shot a few pics of her, and then she jumped onto the ottoman by the front window, and the lighting was PERFECT!!!! So while she was looking at my brother, I snapped a shot!!!!! PERFECTO!!!! My dad helped me touch her up(on the computer0, but we could only do little adjustments because we were entering it in the fair. Fast-forward a few days. Tonight we all went to the fair, and we met up with some friends and, o...

Microchipping: Is it really safe?

My dog, Daisy, gets out a lot! We usually can see her across the street, but if we can't find her for a while, I start to get panicky(which is when I have to pray and ask God to help me stay calm)! So after we found her(across the street), my dad found this thing called a "Tile". It is not a finished product, but it will be out in a little bit. Anyway, a "Tile" is this device that u can put on anything(keys, purses, runaway dogs, etc.) that you REALLY don't want to lose. So my dad thought it would be good to get one to put on Daisy's collar. So I was telling my mom about it, and she said "Maybe, but how about getting her microchipped?" "Well, usually vets do that when dogs or cats are getting spayed/neutered. Besides, some people think animals get cancer from them." So then she asked me to look it up. And I found  http://www.dogsnaturallymagazine.com/microchips-pet/  . If you click on the link, you can read all about microchipping. I...

Children of the World

O.K., I'll admit it, this post has nothing to do with dogs(unlike the "What is a Friend?" post; that one had dog parts in it). But this was a really neat expierience and I wanted to share it with you guys. But first, meet the stars of this post: Jabez(left) and Francis(right)                                                                                                   In the beginning of the year,(sometime, I don't know exactly when it was, my dad is on the computer right now trying to figure that out)(it's March, I just now found out) our church(Family Church of Sutherlin/Green) was sponsoring a group of children from the Philippines, Nepal, and Uganda. They travel around the US to different churches, performing different dances for ever...

Training Your Dog

Sometimes it is hard to train your dog. Different dogs respond differently to training. Some dogs are quick learners and are very intelligent. Others may take a while to learn what you want him to do. Others(coughDaisycough) are very smart, but can be VERRRRY stubborn. Other dogs, like the Poodle, can be sensitive to harsh training and don't do well with a strict owner. Strict can mean 2 different things: Are kind, but don't accept goofing off(or slacking) Are not nice(at all!), and DEFINITELY don't accept goofing off(or slacking) In this case, I mean the 2nd definition(are not nice and don't accept goofing off). Anyway, you know your dog better than I do, so you have to find out what works for you. Some dogs are more food-driven, while other dogs will accept your praise and petting as a treat(my dog doesn't accept petting and praise as a reward; she has to have something to go into her digestive system. In other words, she has to have a treat that she can...

German Shepherds

Image
German Shepherd Dogs(GSDs) are BIG dogs! They are in the "Herding Group", but sometimes I think they should be in the "Working Group"(because they serve as police dogs, and search-and-rescue dogs, etc. etc.). But they were first herding dogs(hence the name German "Shepherd' Dog). Anyway, most Germans are black and tan with black mask and black saddle markings, but can vary in color. White is not allowed in the show ring. Should be brushed frequently to control shedding. Male German Shepherds are 24-26 in and weigh 65-90 lbs; Females are 22-24 in and 50-70 lbs. They have great stamina and require daily mental and physical challenges, otherwise they will become bored and depressed if not exercised properly. Germans train very well, they can focus on one thing and not be distracted by noises and movement around them. They are considered to be one of the smartest breeds. GSDs were the first breed to become a guide dog for the blind. The American Kennel Clu...

Horrible, Horrible Thing

I just got an email from PetSmart Charities,(from Jan Wilkins, Executive Director) and the last part of the email said this: An estimated 4 million dogs and cats will be euthanized this year - never getting the love or safe home every pet deserves. It breaks my heart.  Please help save a pet's life today. OHHHH! It breaks my heart too! It truly is a horrible, horrible thing.

Dog Years(cont.)

I found this on a website on dog years and I wanted to share it with you guys: Canine Age Human Age  2 Months 14 Months 6 Months 5 Years 8 Months 9 Years 1 Year 15 Years 2 Years 24 Years 3 Years 28 Years 4 Years 32 Years 5 Years 37 Years 6 Years 42 Years 7 Years 47 Years 8 Years 52 Years 9 Years 57 Years 10 Years 62 Years 11 Years 67 Years 12 Years 72 Years 13 Years 77 Years 14 Years 82 Years http://www.dogyears.com     supplied this information

Dog Years

People are always getting confuse on "Dog Years". How long exactly is a "Dog Year"? Some people say 1 Dog Year is equal to 6 Human Years. But some people are saying 7 years. So, on Fido's 5th birthday, is he 30, or is he 35? And when it's Molly's 10th birthday, is she 60, or is she 70? Also, smaller dogs tend to live longer than larger dogs. But why? Well, big dogs are, obviously, have a big body. And their heart has to work harder and pump more blood, so their bodies get tired quicker than little dogs. And then they just can't live any longer because their heart is so tired. So, does that mean that 10 is old for big dogs, but little dogs still have a few years to live? It is sooooooo confusing! Like, my grandma's pug lived to be 20! But our big dog(he was Lab mix) lived to be about 13(which is actually long for a dog his size)! He died a few years ago. And I still miss Bondo sooooo much!!!!!!!! It was sooo hard for me when he died. Bondo was old...

Poodle

Poodles come in 3 different sizes: Standard, Miniature, and Toy. All Poodles have hair, not fur, so it keeps on growing and growing. Because of they have hair, they don't shed(and are considered to be hypoallergenic), and are good for people with allergies. Also, their coat is harsh-textured and dense throughout(coat also can be corded). Coloring varies from blue, gray, brown, silver, apricot, black, white, cream, and café au lait. Poodles must be brushed daily to keep the coat from tangling. They should be clipped every 6-8 weeks. They are 4 different styles allowed for competing: puppy clip, English saddle clip, continental clip, and the sporting clip. Poodles are one of the most intelligent breeds; they learn fast and are easy to train. Poodles have long memories and are very sensitive, so if you handle them harshly, they won't forget it! Puppies need to be well socialized, so they are comfortable with people when they are older. They get along well with other pets, and are...

Bichon Frise

So the Bichon Frise(Bi-SHON Free-SAY) is a VERY cute little dog. I like to call them "snowball dogs", due to the way the hair on their head is usually trimmed(like a snow ball). Bichons are in the Non-Sporting Group(which is very different from the toy group. The dogs in the Toy Group are small, but dogs in the Non-Sporting Group can be any size. For example, the Dalmation, is in the Non-Sporting Group), and they are small dogs. They have a soft, curly double coat. The coat has a bouncy feeling when you touch it, and it stands away from the Bichon's body, making it look like a little snowball. They have pure white coats, but an apricot, cream or buff shading is allowed in competition. They like to go for long walks and enjoy playing with their owners. You should brush your Bichon Frise daily, and visit a groomer monthly for a trim and/or bath. The Bichons are very cheerful, playful dogs. They are very intelligent, but are sensitive and cannot tolerate harsh training. They...

Chesapeake Bay Retriever

The Chesapeake Bay Retriever(aka the state dog Maryland) is a strong, medium sized dog. They have deep chests and  a short, strong back. Their tail is of medium length, and their short, harsh coat is water-proof. Their eye color varies from yellow to amber. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is one of the toughest water dogs, and is a descendant of the Newfoundlands. Their life  expectancy is 10-13 years. Chessie's activity level is high; they are working dogs with great stamina. They enjoy hiking, swimming, and jogging. Chessies need to be brushed weekly, but you only have to bathe them every 3-4 months. Chessies need to be trained when they are puppies; otherwise, the can become willful and very assertive if training is neglected. http://www.akc.org/breeds/chesapeake_bay_retriever/index.cfm The American Kennel Club's meet the breeds: dog breeds A to Z/ author, The American Kennel Club

What is a Friend?

This post doesn't have much to do with dogs. But I wanted to post it anyway. So, I got to thinking, what is a friend? What does the word "friend" really mean? And when I say that, I don't mean the root word or where it came from, I mean what is the definition of a true friend? Is it someone thats loyal to you? Is it someone who you can confide in? Is a friend someone who gives you hugs and makes you feel better when your sad? Or is a friend someone who would give up their life for you, or someone who would just give up half of their candy? Or, is a friend someone who has stayed with you, through the good and the bad? There are many different kinds of friends. Some are closer than others, and some are more like you than other friends. Dogs(I didn't say I wasn't going to talk about dogs, just that it isn't all about dogs) are considered "Man's Best Friend". I have to agree with that, but that is not the point I'm trying to make. In my op...

Online Veterinary Colleges

So if you want to become a vet, then you have to take 7-8 years of college!!!! WOW!!!!! That's a LONG time! So I figured that I should start taking some basic college classes when I'm in high school(by the way, you can do that in America). But I'm only in 7th grade(well, when school starts, anyway)! High school is 2 years away! I know to you adults, that is not a long time, but to us kids it is! So I started looking for online colleges that I can take over the summer! A lot of veterinary colleges have an online program that anyone can take! And if you think that's cool, wait until you here this: some of them are free!!!!!!!! Again, I know that for some adults that isn't very big, but hey! I'm a kid! It's not like I have a job or something! Actually, I do. But noway is Oregon TailBlazers going to get me enough money to watch videos of a person doing surgery on a dog! So, for me, FREE VETERINARY CLASSES are PRETTY COOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So now I'm in the proce...

TOYS: which ones are safe?

These days, when you go into pet stores, there are sooooooo many different toys!!!!!! Does Fifi need all of them? Which ones are safe for Rover? Would Fido enjoy this one more? That's the question now days. We bring Daisy to my grandparents house every Sunday, and they constantly are buying toys for her: squeaky toys, stuffed toys, rope toys, you get the idea. And she always tears them up, very quickly(with exception of the rope toys)!!! It can be a waste of money. So then, we(as humans) turn to homemade toys or children's toys. But, because they were made for kids(not dogs) the seems can be very loose and the stuffing will come out. Or, if it has button eyes or nose, then Rover could choke on the little pieces. Or Fifi could get stuffing stuck in her mouth. Or, even worse, Fido might even swallow small toys!!!!! Then they could get caught somewhere in the digestion system, and cause expensive vet bills. There goes the "money saver" idea! So, is it better to give Fido...

Jobs with Dogs

If you love dogs enough to want to work with them, then there are many jobs that enable you to work with dogs. There is a variety of jobs with dogs, depending on what you like. The list I have supplied is just a few of the many Dog Jobs. Animal Behaviorists: work with animals who have unwanted behaviors; sometimes can prescribe medicine(Veterinary Behaviorists), not all owners listen to what you suggest, risks injury from stressed animals. Doggie Day Care: take care of dogs(and/or pets) while owners are at work or on vacation; get to play with dogs(animals) all day, possibly overnight, dogs can get into fights and may possibly bite humans or other dogs. Dog Breeding: breed and raise puppies(happy and healthily), can either be a hobby or a career; get to experience raising puppies from birth(and before), may not make profit for many years, puppies may die(mother's might die, also), can get costly. Dog Grooming: clipping and styling dogs fur/hair, sometimes dying their fur/hair ...

Getting Daisy to swim: Part 2

Well, so far, I haven't made much progress with Daisy, but I have to remember to be consistent ! So, I guess I'll have to keep getting my hands dirty(wet, actually)! But, remember my Roll-Over post? Well, Daisy has finally learned to do that!!!!!!!!!! She can sit, high-five, lay, and then ROLL-OVER!!!!!!!! It is soooooooo exciting! I haven't worked that much on "Heel", but we're working on it. If you have anything you would like me to make a post of, please comment on any post telling me what you would like me to do(a specific dog breed, training, some sort of disease, etc.)! So, please start commenting!

Getting Daisy to Swim: Part 1

I love swimming!!!! But my dog, Daisy, absolutely hates it!!! So, last summer, I was determined to get her to love swimming! But, throwing her in the pool a couple times last summer, didn't cut it. So I came up with this new technique of gently getting her used to water. My plan is to bring her to the pool every day. I scoop up some water with my hands and put a little bit of water on her. I praise her, then pick her up and bring her into the house to get a "treat". I had to carry her in the house, because if i just let go, she would think she "got away". That's what I did today. I plan on getting her used to the water a little bit more each day, and making sure I praise and treat her every time. That's the key with dogs! You just have to be consistent (just make sure your loaded with treats)! I can't tell you how many people get so frustrated with their dogs, just because they aren't consistent ! Some dogs take longer to learn then others, so be...

Yorkshire Terrier

Image
The Yorkshire Terrier(aka Yorkie) is a long-haired dog that originated in England. It is also a toy-sized dog, therefore it is in the Toy Group(even though it is a Yorkshire Terrier , it is in the toy group). The yorkie has a long coat which needs to be touching the ground, if it is going to be a show dog. Otherwise, most owners go with the "puppy cut" which is basically just a shorter coat which is much easier to comb! The yorkies ears are erect in a V-shape. They grow to be approx. 7 in at the shoulder, and approx. 7 lbs. Yorkies don't have and undercoat, so they rarely shed. Their coat is black and tan when they are born, then the coat changes slightly as the puppy grows. The coat tends to lighten up, too. The yorkie gets along well with other pets, though it might chase smaller rodents, it was bred to chase mice out of clothing mills in England. Back then it was a working dog, though there was proof they used to hunt for smaller game. The Yorkshire Terrier was deve...

Weimaraner

Weimaraners are very interesting dogs. Their shoulder height is anywhere form 22" to 28", and they usually weigh between 55 and 85 lbs. Weimaraners are always a shade of gray, varying from a more brown-gray to a black-gray. They originated from Germany, where they were the results of cross-breeding bloodhounds and other hunting dogs in Europe.  They are in the Sporting Group Category. When I said they were very interesting dogs (which they are), I meant that they have very interesting facts about the breed. For example, the Weimaraner's eyes. When they are puppies, their eyes are blue, but when they are adults, their eyes turn yellow! And they have many important jobs they do. For example, they are used as police dogs, search-and-rescue dogs, watchdogs, and even your best friend.
