Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

This sweet, loving dog is a great lap dog. In fact, the King Charles Spaniel used to sleep in the beds of kings and queens to attract parasites to them, and not to their masters! The breed is named after King Charles II, and was a popular and fashionable lap dog in Scotland. There lovely feathered coats come in four different colors: tri-colored, ruby(the most popular), chestnut and white, and my personal favorite, the black and tan. The King Charles Spaniel is a breeze to train! Teach them once, and they never forget it. These smarties should be walked once a day, since they are a small lap dog(unlike the great dane, which even though huge, is considered a lap dog, because it likes to sit in your lap!). The  King Charles Spaniel has a life-span of approx. 10-15 years. Some of them do not make it that long, though. These dogs are prone to heart disease. When adopting, make sure the parents have not had heart disease, otherwise, your little guy could have some pr...

Vizsla

The Vizsla(pronounced VISH-LA), is a very pretty dog. They have a copper-colored, short-haired coat, which is very easy to groom. All breeds have a neat fact, but this one is calling you germ-free people. Amazingly, the Vizsla is an odorless dog! They don't have that doggie smell like other dogs do, because, like cats, Vizsla licks itself! How weird! Anyway, they are very energetic. These are not the best dog for apartments, because they need over 1.5 hours of exercise every day!!! But they love to relax with you, after their long run! They have a very good sense of smell, and are easily motivated. If you cross a Weimaraner and a German Short-Haired Pointer, you get a beautiful cross-breed dog! They are also a good hunter, hence the German Short-Haired Pointer in them. They have extremely long toes, which is another cat-liked characteristic. Saving Grace

I just started volunteering at Saving Grace, the coolest animal shelter around! I absolutely LOVE volunteering there! I go there every Saturday to do Dog Walking and Animal Enrichment! Last week, my dad and I made treats for the dogs and cats, took three dogs out, and brushed the kitties! And all in 2 1/2 hours! The most productive hours of my day! We made a lot of animals happy! And so could you! See if your local animal shelter has a volunteer application. It will be so much more fun than sitting on the couch and eating chips all day long! So, please help your local animal shelter by donating, volunteering, etc. See what you can do to help the animals today! P.S. If you have anything you would like me to make a post of, please comment on any post telling me what you would like me to do(a specific dog breed, training, some sort of disease, etc.)! So, please start commenting! http://www.savinggrace.info/

Roll-Over

Everyone wants a dog that can do really cool tricks, right? Well, Roll-Over is one cool trick. Usually cool tricks take some practice and a lot of hard work, like getting your dog to play dead or jump through the ring, is a lot harder than getting your dog to sit. The cool thing about the cool Roll-Over trick, is that it is not that hard to do! Here is one of the easiest* ways to do this awesome trick: Before you do this trick, your dog has to know how to lay/down.** If they do then great! you are ready to start putting the trick into action(but also get some yummy treats***)! First, tell your dog to lay/down(sometimes you have to tell your dog to sit, then lay/down). Reward them with a treat. Push on their side to move them onto their back. This can be very challenging, especially if you have a big dog! Say "Roll-Over", and give them a treat. Over the corse of several to many days, repeat this until you don't have to push their side. This means that they have successfu...

Pit Bull

Pit bulls are very sweet, loving dogs that make great pets. They do have a bad rap, but that is because they have a jaw that can only be released by the pit bull itself. Unfortunately, because people have trained them to be fighting dogs, these dogs are banned in many places including Denver and parts of Florida, Great Britain and New Zealand and over 500 cities have strict pit bull restrictions. These dogs are prone to heart disease, allergies, and hip dysplasia. And pit bulls have been abused can come to love and trust humans again. http://animal.discovery.com/tv-shows/dogs-101/videos/american-pit-bull.htm Please Note: If you click on this link, there will be a brief commercial before the video starts.

Head Halter

This is a question that a lot of people wonder about. Head Halters look cruel and inhumane, but the truth is this: Head halters are NOT cruel! The idea of the head halter is taken from the horse's halti, but it is usually a little bit smaller =) Head halters are used for training ONLY. Head halters are not meant for abuse. It is a good idea, if you are planning on buying, to have someone who is familiar with head halters to assist you to make sure it fits properly. Make sure it is not too loose, yet not too tight. After that, you should make sure your dog is comfortable with the head halter before you walk in the public. Some of this information was attained by Marc Morrone's book, "Ask the Dog Keeper"

Lay/Down

Teaching your dog manners is very important. Lay, or down is very important. But make sure before you do this, that you have a cue word picked out. You should NEVER pick a cue word with two words in it(lay-down, sit-down), that have other meanings. You will just have a confused dog. I chose "Lay" because "Down" is what I use when she  jumps up. So, this is how I taught Daisy Lay: I got some treats in my hand. I would call Daisy over. I would tell her to sit, and then I would say "Lay" and push between her shoulders. She was very stubborn at first, but eventually, she got it. I am very proud of her. Some dogs are smart, but stubborn. Daisy is a Puggle(pug and beagle mix), and puggles are stubborn. Different dogs have different personalities. Your dog might even be stubborn as a puppy, and be willing as he/she ages. Aren't dogs wonderful?!

The Great Pyrenees

Image
The Great Pyrenees is a gigantic dog! When it is full grown, it's head will be larger than yours! This dog was a shepherd dog long ago. Did you know that male Great Pyrenees are on an average of 115 pounds, while females 85 pounds. They live approximately 10 years. They are usually white or cream, but that can be rust colored, although, as they age, their coat gets lighter. Their beautiful coat needs to be brushed once a week(at the minimum). Of course, it wouldn't hurt to brush it more often=) They are known to be gentle and sweet, but they have a tendency to growl at strangers, unless trained against it. Overall, this dog is a great family pet, but will NOT do good in apartment dwelling, hence it's large size.

Heel!

To teach your dog to heel can be difficult. If you look in magazines and dog training books, most of them will have a different technique than the next one. Here is a way that is mixed between a technique that I came up with and the technique written in Puppy School by Maggie Holt and Stella Sweeting. I'm using this technique to train my dog, Daisy, heel. I tell Daisy to "Hook Up" and I clip the leash on her collar. I take her outside and we start our walk. When she pulls I stop and say nothing. When she stops pulling I continue walking. When she is walking right next to me, I praise her. According to Puppy School by Maggie Holt and Stella Sweeting, dogs pull out of excitement, not because they are being naughty.

Potty Traing

Hey! This potty-training technique might be too much for some people, but this is a great way to for your dog to have plenty of opportunities to do his/her business in the right place! Take your puppy outside to do his/her business. If they do, make a big fuss over them. If they don't, simply bring them inside. Whether they go or not, set a timer for 20 minutes. When the timer goes off, take them outside again. Repeat. The next day, day, set the timer for 30 minutes. Day after that, set the timer for 45 minutes. Then an hour. Keeping doing it until they are completely potty-trained(if they can't do 30 minutes, do 20 minutes until they can). This is a time consuming technique way to do it, as you can imagine. It works, but if you are occupied during the day, there are many other ways to potty-train your dog. Good luck!

Lhasa Apso

Image
The Lhasa Apso is a cute, loving, lapdog. The Lhasa Apso is a non-sporting dog that has a long coat that comes in a variety of colors. This dog is 12-18 pounds and requires socialization as a puppy, as it was a guard dog in monastaries in Tibet. This little dog is barky and can be hard to house train. The Lhasa Aspo doesn't naturally love water. But it can be trained to like water as the long coat will need regular bathing and brushing. Overall, the Lhasa Apso is a great little dog that is not to tiny and just the perfect size for a lapdog. The Lhasa Apso is has a long life, and it can live well in it's 20's! The oldest Lhasa Apso was 28 years!

Puppy Mills

Image
Puppy Mills are horrible things. Here are some things you might not of known about Puppy Mills. The poor dogs are kept in cages for their entire life, which helps spread disease They NEVER touch grass or solid ground for the whole time they are at the Mill The dogs die of the heat in the summer and freeze in the winter The females are bred over and over until they can't reproduce any more. After that they are usually killed or sold to laboratories for experiments Dog food is bought by the truckload. Sometimes it is made of the sweepings from the floor(That is SOOOOO gross.) About 3,500 petstores in the US sell puppies from Puppy Mills Petstores lie about where the puppies came from. They will tell you that the puppies came from local or quality breeders. Ask to see the paperwork and you can find out where they really came from. Please, help us shut down Puppy Mills. For more Facts, go to www.prisonersofgreed.org/  for more information.
